Moss Update 6/12/11

The moss is brown and showing no signs of recovery.  I normally don't like to kick things while they're down, or add insult to injury, but I will make an exception when dealing with moss.  The moss will be treated again on Tuesday of this week and again next Monday.  I need to keep the surface of the greens as dry as possible during this process.  Aerifying the greens with needle tines and topdressing are key factors to this throughout the season.

We also can't forget that we need to create an environment that favors grass not moss.  Moss will come back if the conditions are right.  Core aerification in the spring and fall is essential for keeping it out. The surface of the greens cannot hold water and removing organic matter is critical. Too much organic matter can hold large amounts of moisture, it acts just like a sponge. Aeration is a practice used by golf courses to help keep organic matter under control and has many other benefits that will be discussed later. It's not done to anger our members or customers!
