Fall is approaching!

Fall means football season, beautiful fall colors and turf managers aerating greens.

Aeration to most is like a swear word, but it needs to be done to promote healthier turf.  Aeration relieves compaction, removes unwanted organic matter, and allows for oxygen and nutrients to the root system.  It's a very important practice turf managers do to give you the quality putting surface you seek all summer long.

Metamora's greens had a severe moss problem that has been promoted by an organic matter build-up over the past several years and the only way to get rid of it is to remove it.  The greens will be aerated the week of September 12th with a set up of 1/4 inch coring tines.  The putting service will be disrupted, but after heavy topdressing and rolling they will putt just fine.  The greens will be aerated again the week of October 10th with a set-up of 3/8 inch coring tines on 1.25 inch centers.

Although some of you may not be thrilled about this news, just remember it's a necessary evil that will help keep the greens in the best possible condition.
