Greens health begins with the root system!
The greens overall are in great health, before this last batch of storms that came through I only watered the greens once in 8 days. Sure we were out watering hot spots and collars, but I'm talking about turning the sprinklers on to water the entire green. Some of you may be wondering how that is possible? The humidity has been high, so moisture loss is low, but more importantly it is the greens root system. When roots are shallow on sand based greens they are going to require a little water almost every night or every other night, but the deeper the roots the longer you can go without watering. This is a profile picture of #7 green. This greens root depth is about 6". For the end of July that is really good. What does this all mean? It means it can withstand drought stress and mechanical stress better. It can also out compete moss and tolerate lower mowing heights.
