Vertical Mowing

Vertical mowing is the process in which knife-like blades rotate perpendicular to the ground. Light vertical mowing is often done to minimize grain, stimulate growth and removes a tiny bit of thatch. This type of vertical mowing is done weekly, bi-weekly or monthly through out the growing season.

Sometimes a much more aggressive vertical mowing is needed. This sometimes takes a different machine which enables special carbide tip blades to really get down into the thatch and pull it up and out.  Ideally, these blades are set to the depth of the soil so a lot of thatch and some soil can be removed. Pictured below is what our machine looks like and the results we get when doing tees. This type of vertical mowing is not needed as often and is typically done in the spring and/or fall. Complete healing time can take up to two weeks.
